What Is Social Science?

The Major Branches of Social Science
These study notes explain the four major branches of Social Science that students study at the secondary level. History studies the past — events, civilizations, movements, and the actions of people and nations that have shaped the present world. Geography studies the Earth's physical features, climate, natural resources, and the relationship between human beings and their environment. Political Science (Civics) studies governments, constitutions, democracy, rights, duties, and how political systems function. Economics studies how individuals, families, businesses, and governments manage resources, produce goods and services, and make decisions about money and trade.
Why Is Social Science Important?
Social Science is not just an academic subject — it is a life skill. Understanding history helps us learn from the past. Understanding geography helps us appreciate the diversity of our world. Understanding civics helps us become responsible citizens. Understanding economics helps us make better decisions in daily life. Together these disciplines develop critical thinking, empathy, and an informed world view in students.
How Social Science Is Taught Under NEP 2020
Under the new CBSE curriculum aligned with NEP 2020, Social Science is taught in an integrated manner — connecting History, Geography, Civics, and Economics to real-life situations and encouraging students to think across disciplines rather than in isolated subject silos.
